Support available for improving emotional, mental and social development of SEN students
It’s not always the case that students who need a bit of extra help at school have a special educational need, or a long-term disability. There are actually a few reasons that students might need some extra support from school. These include the following: a family bereavement, caring responsibilities, long-term illness, communication difficulties (e.g. not speaking English), not going to school regularly, behavioural and/or emotional difficulties or bullying.
It’s not always the case that students who are getting extra support will need it in the future. It’s just as likely to be a short-term solution to a temporary problem as it is to be a long-term strategy for handling a learning difficulty.
The SENDco and/or Learning Support Manager meet regularly with the Educational Psychology team at BwD, to discuss and form strategies for students with high level needs or those at risk of exclusion. The outcome of these consultations are shared with teaching staff, through the review of Student Profiles. Where appropriate, or if strategies make little or no impact, students will be referred for assessment with the Educational Psychologist.
